Miss Representation

Miss Representaion addresses an issue that been prevalent throughout the history of civilization; an issue that is yet to be resolved. The documentary covers how the media in so many ways have downgraded the role of women in status and success that men have never been put through. it does a good job on how women are pressured to rely on looks throughout their from Ivy League high school students to women who have achieved corporate success on their own terms in spite of pressure from society to fully retain their femininity. what they discussed is not a topic one could clearly be surprised. The part that stuck with me is when female politicians were discussed and how the media portrays them more inclined towards rheir feminine roles such when the papers address Hilary Clinton as Mrs
Clinton instead of her title of Secretary of State. Another segment is when Katie Couric talked about how she refrained from having amore alluring image due to beoadcasting pressure even when she gained respect from her news peers. Very few shows on television have shown women in power such as Geena Davis portaying a US president but it was shortly cancelled. TV networks have tended always to target primarily a male audience and assume that they prefer to see females through a sexually alluring lens objectified by more powerful male characters. One show that did hained success with a largely female cast and crew was 30 Rock created by Tina Fey. In it she plays a parody of herself based on her head writing experience at Saturday Night Live. The show was critically acclaimed and received multiple awards and nomimations but failed to gain a large audience and only lasted seven seasons. The documentary again covered a topic that has been discussed heavily and needed to be discussed for it has largely been ignored. There needs to be a change within media to help raise this sterotypical view that females are always less than males in all aspects of society but as of now very little has done and will be a hot button issue until then.
